From reducing the number of people experiencing homelessness to moving more individuals from the streets into housing, the results are encouraging. Calling all Anchorage housing providers! Our local grant competition for Continuum of Care projects is on! Organizations that already have a grant from through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development CoC program should make sure to renew their grant application. We also encourage organizations to submit proposals for new, or bonus, projects. As the local lead agency for the Anchorage Continuum of Care, we manage our community's collaborative application to HUD. We also are looking for community members who have experienced homelessness to take part in the Rank & Review Committee for scoring projects. Next Step is working! We LOVE how our community comes together to house our neighbors. So far, 177 have gone from homelessness to housed including 27 who were unsheltered and living outdoors. In all, Next Step has led to 177 people being housed including 27 people this summer from two encampments, Jacobson Park and the camp near Elderberry Park off the Coastal Trail. Follow us. Another round of move-ins on the books! Fourteen people from an encampment just off the Coastal Trail near Elderberry Park now have a home. A woman who camped there for the last year and a half felt anxious about the move. But as she walked into her new apartment, her face lit up. She now sees herself on a path to "being on the other side," no longer a person being helped, but one of the helpers. A man with at least nine years of homelessness couldn't believe someone was willing to take a chance on him. A young man said he was ready, too — he had hit rock bottom too many times. Each story is different but for each, the safety and security of a home provide the right environment to keep moving forward long past move-in day. Some of those living outdoors find it hard to remember the last time they lived in a good place. Some have never had a place of their own.
